Just changed my LiveSpaces theme. New look, new feel. New page layout. Why, you ask? Because I said so dammit. I was getting bored with the previous one already - yes I get bored very easily - so I went ahead and changed it. Not like I changed a whole lot about it either, because LiveSpaces sucks and they don't have too many personalization options. So you either end up with a theme that probably a hundred other people are using, or you just force yourself to sit there and pretend to be happy about the lame boring colors on your space. Lame boring colors indeed.

Anyway, why red, you ask? Yosh, I'm aware red isn't exactly the calming color. It's proven to aggravate headaches and possibly increase PMS levels by a factor of 0.5%. But no, I'm not trying to attract menopausal people and make them crash bang their monitors. Not exactly. I was only trying to get an AKATSUKI feel to the whole thing. lol.

What's AKATSUKI? The coolest rouge ninja organization EVER is what it is! Weirdly, the organization is all about bringing back peace to the world, by destroying everything in it XP The logic behind that goal is as follows:

1. War sucks.
   
2. The ninja nations are always warring.
   
3. Ninja nations earn their keep from their services in war.
   
4. Therefore ninja nations provoke war, just to keep the money rolling.
   
5. Minor villages that have nothing to do with any of the ninja nations' war games are victimized and pretty much totally destroyed and left to fend for themselves.


6. War sucks.
   
7. Therefore in order to prevent war you got to build this totally menacing weapon of mass destruction to scare the shit out of people.
   
8. And then you'd actually use it on the entire world. The people who survive remember the pain and stay the heck away from any thoughts of war.
   
9. Hence there'll be peace. But only for a little while, after which the cycle starts again and history repeats itself.

In the words of Pain (the 'leader' of AKATSUKI) :

"The world will know true pain, and the fear of that pain will put an end to war... It will lead the world to stability and peace."

"Eventually the checkmate's power will weaken and people will begin fighting again. This time they will use the weapon themselves and once more know true pain. And then for a short time peace will come again, ... it will give birth to short periods of peace within this endless chain of hatred .... that is my wish."

The 'power' they're talking about here is the combined power of the nine demon forces that are currently sealed within human 'vessels' (known as Bijuu). Now our main character Naruto is one of them, and happens to have the ninth - the nine tailed demon fox - sealed within him. So naturally AKATSUKI was after him (until he pwned Pain and convinced Nagato, the guy controlling the six bodies of Pain, to not go beserk on the world just yet).

Hmm... doesn't this sound a lot like war and politics today? Take the West for example. We've got some of the richest and most powerful countries of the world coming together and actually nurturing terrorism in other developing countries. Why? Because it's fast cash baby! Big guns, drugs, ammo, and whatnot. And of course more big guns and ammo are handed over to the countries going through all that crap at the delegates' table. Fast cash, fast cash. Two faces, fast cash.

Which is why I'm so not against Iran or Korea or any other nation building nuclear weapons. The East needs them too. I mean, what right does the West have in ordering the East to disarm themselves while they keep their precious nukes, ready any time to wipe out the 'poorer' part of the world? I'm not saying they will nuke the world, I'm just saying WE don't need their threats. Ethno-centric idiots.

Okay, so here's another memorable Pain quote:

"We are but men, drawn to act in the name of revenge we deem to be "Justice." But when we call our vengeance "Justice," it only breeds more revenge...forging the first link in the chains of hatred."

That reminds me of a quote by the Buddha about the word JUSTICE where He said "Justice is a dangerous word."

They're both really powerful, especially in this day and age. Kishimoto-sama is phenomenal methinks. He has created a real-life story about war, heroism, justice, death, and life, and for people who really aren't into religious teachings could probably learn something about the way the world works through anime.

That brings me to another point. I really can't stand people who assume anime sucks just because it's 'cartoons' that are not at the level of detail as Disney. I especially can't stand people who dare to make that comment even without dedicating themselves to a few episodes of a good recommended anime. (BTW have you seen Disney's latest works cartoon-wise? OMJ sucky sucky sucky! Totally poorly done with no original plot. B.O.R.I.N.G) Yes, so their opinion boils down to just presumptions and prejudice. I know because I used to be one of those people. I thought anime was just bad animation with squeaky voices. Only then did I discover the phenomenal difference between the Japanese originals and the Arabic dubs! lol.

You've got to approach something new with an open mind to fully understand the benefits. And Naruto has a great story - apart from the crappy fillers =_< . Naruto was the first real anime series I started watching and it's been five years now. I've pretty much gotten addicted to it O.o So yeah, it'll always be at the top of my list. (But there's Code Gaess and Death Note close by too! Two more AWESOME anime btw. I'm still discovering more...)

Not exactly a big fan of Bleach though, because I feel the plot is quite lacking... But I admit the fight scenes are awesome and they've got some hilarious comedy scenes too! And the music is way too cool sometimes XD Too too cool that sometimes the music kicks ass more than the story itself... Also, I don't exactly get how you can 'die' twice. I mean, once you're dead and 'cross over' you go to Soul Society, but then you could also actually die once again in soul society if you're not careful. WTF right? And how come some people 'grow up' in Soul Society? Take Rukia for example. She was a baby when she came to SS, but now she's a woman...? And Gin, Rangiku, Byakuya... they all 'grew up' too. And Hitsugaya's still a kid...?! The whole thing just went around and contradicted itself didn't it..? *yes it did*

But Naruto? Well I just feel Naruto touches on so many human topics, and it's like everybody can relate to at least one character. It's not about the music, or the outfits, the comedy, or even the fight scenes. It's all about the human struggle in a complicated world that you've got no control over. The only thing you can control is yourself and you have to use that will power and faith in yourself to make some meaning out of your life... Otherwise you'll just become a 'tool' in somebody else's big plans. And I like that kind of story :D That's why Naruto/Naruto Shippuuden's numbah 1 on my list!

Ooh! And I'll be going to Sri Lanka on the 28th. Unfortunately the Kelaniya district has the highest number of dengue cases, as well as swine flu cases. So I'm hoping dad doesn't want us to spend the entire holiday at grandmother's. OMJ noooooo! I hate staying there! For the simple reason that I don't like my grandmother lol.

Yeah, so anyway, I've thought of working on the 100 theme challenge during the holidays. It's supposed to be a 100 ART themes, but I'm going to write them out as part of an English essay writing practice course for my brothers. And we're going to blog it. LOL. I come up with fun ways to teach huh? I'm just hoping it works... >=D

Buddhism and Abortion

Mention the word Buddhist and what most people draw up is an image of the stereotypic liberal: hippie, junkie, vegan, possibly homosexual, and now, even pro-abortion. Drugs and vegetarianism aside, let me clear any confusion there is about abortion.

This is from a Buddhist’s point of view.

Alright, first off, let us examine as to why certain people hold such a view. It’s not that it’s entirely wrong to say that some ‘modern’ Buddhists today actually uphold this image, but it is wrong to say that all Buddhists in general conform to this image. In fact, only a handful so called Buddhists do, and, according to Buddhist terms, this handful does not qualify as Buddhists.

One must understand that Buddhism is a very free religion, with no commandments or god to obey. It is not at all as strict as Christianity, Islam, or even Judaism. Unfortunately, it is this freedom that is abused by the naive and dim-witted.

Many people who want to follow in their frivolous lifestyles assume that they will be free from judgment by a god or any other all-powerful deity if they embrace Buddhism. Buddhism is their ‘way out’ of a ‘system’ that bars them from their activities. They use – or should I say misuse – this freedom and take it as a shield while they engage in their frivolous and irresponsible activities. They use Buddhism as an excuse.

So what is the Buddhist view on this subject of abortion? Before we get into the details, let us first come up with a definition for the term.

“An abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by the removal or expulsion from the uterus of a fetus or embryo, resulting in or caused by its death. An abortion can occur spontaneously due to complications during pregnancy or can be induced, in humans and other species. In the context of human pregnancies, an abortion induced to preserve the health of the pregnant female is termed a therapeutic abortion, while an abortion induced for any other reason is termed an elective abortion. The term abortion most commonly refers to the induced abortion of a human pregnancy, while spontaneous abortions are usually termed miscarriages.”

Okay, so abortion = termination of a pregnancy resulting in the death of the fetus.

Now let’s look at why abortions are carried out.

1. Medical complications – Either both mother and child, or mother alone, may have fatal or serious complications if the pregnancy is allowed to be carried to term.

2. Rape victims – Rape victims who have become pregnant do not wish to carry the child of their rapist. This decision is usually carried out as a result of emotional trauma, including hatred, and shame. Sometimes it is the family of the victim that persuades her to go through with an abortion, for the sake of saving the family reputation. The victim is left with the decision to bring the baby to the world and lose support from her family, give the baby up for adoption, or to abort the pregnancy. Usually, the family does not opt for adoption because society will get to know about the mother’s pregnancy. After all, it is pretty hard to hide a progressively developing belly (unless you tell people you’ve got a massive tumor growing in there...). Therefore abortion is usually the most common choice.

3. ‘Accidents’ happen. A wild night out, or a one night stand (without the pills, or condoms) sometimes ends up with the female party getting knocked up. Neither parents are ready to take up responsibility for their actions and therefore decide to just easily abort the pregnancy.

Why is abortion viewed merely as something scientific, or medical, rather than something closely related to ethics? Or morals? When you break something down so much into establishing it as a scientific procedure that is exactly what it becomes: just another scientific procedure. And when we think scientific, we don’t exactly think religion, or morals, do we? No, because we are taught – especially at the beginning of a semester of genetics – that science and religion don’t mix. So abortion suddenly becomes just another surgery. A quick fix to a ‘problem’.

Can there really be a scientific religion in actual existence? Science and religion are supposed to be two different things. Science attempts to explain and find answers to questions that deal with the natural world, the mundane everyday world and universe that is perceived by the senses. Religion, on the other hand, tries to explain things that cannot be otherwise explained in the mundane world. Religion deals with the supernatural and the spiritual.

However, it is interesting to note that Buddhism is neither a science nor a religion. It is not a science because it does not deal only with the world perceived by our senses, and it is not a religion because it does not require ‘belief’ in anything. That is why, if you ask a Buddhist, they’d say ‘I know’ instead of ’I believe’. Neither is it a philosophy, as most commonly refer to it.[1]

However, what Buddhism really is has been greatly misunderstood by those new to the subject. Most blatantly assume that, because Buddhism agrees with a lot of things in modern science, everything scientific is accepted in Buddhism. This is not true. Science is science, and its existence does not rely on morals. Buddhism, on the other hand, is not at all devoid of morals. After all, the very first precept in the Buddhist disciplinary code is “I shall abstain from taking life.”

This is part of the karaniya metta sutta (discourse on loving kindness):

Let one contemplate and wish:

May all beings be well and safe.

May all beings be happy.

Whatever living beings there may be—

whether they are weak or strong, omitting none,

the great or the mighty, medium size, short, small, or large,

those seen and those unseen, those dwelling near and far away,

those born as well as those yet to be born—

may all beings be happy at heart.

From a Buddhist’s point of view, I don’t think we can accept only the scientific definition of what a life is, or more precisely, when a fertilized egg can be considered a human life. We cannot judge whether something is a life or not just because it doesn’t look human or animal.

Most people who’re anti-abortion go to great lengths to carry their cause either by trying to prove that a fetus’ heart starts to beat after so long, or by holding nauseating posters of aborted fetuses. I think this is a simple point and doesn’t need to be carried so far. Simply: if a woman is pregnant, that means she is carrying life, be it one cell or a mass of cells without any discernible features.

Re-read the passage from the karaniya metta sutta. Pay special attention to the line before the last: “those born as well as those yet to be born”. It is obvious that, according to Buddhism, one must respect all life, even those that are yet to be born. If you call yourself a Buddhist and yet say that you are in favor of abortion, then you’re throwing away the meaning of the very first precept of abstaining from taking life. You cannot contemplate and wish for the well-being, safety, and happiness of all beings if you are in favor of taking away an unborn life.

Fortunately, I have no illegitimate children born out of wed lock or as a result of rape. Heaven forbid that ever happens, and I do not wish it to happen to anybody else either! I am not denying that rape is a heinous crime and that it is an extremely painful ordeal that even a lifetime may not be able to erase. But there cannot be any justification in taking away the life of the unborn child that has come into existence as a result of it. After all, what has the child done to deserve such a fate? It may not be an easy thing to do, but to let go of the attachment to the memory of it is possibly the best way to heal: letting go and moving on just like everything else that arises, comes to be, and passes away.[2]

Also, society should be more understanding of victims of rape and should stop stigmatizing them. There are some idiots who blame the victim for what happened! Yeah, I have no clue where they get their logic from...

The worst kind, however, are the people who casually have sex – irresponsibly – whenever they want to and then just very easily throw away the life of an unborn child just because they are not ready to take up responsibility.

What about the case where an abortion needs to be carried out for medical reasons (therapeutic abortion)? What’s the Buddhist view on that? Is it okay to perform a therapeutic abortion? Once again, life is more important than anything else. If you can save at least one life, then it is better than letting two die. Therefore yes, it is okay.

The bottom line is that elective abortion does not sit anywhere on the list of ‘Okays’ in Buddhism, so please do not assume that Buddhism sits in favor of abortion. Buddhism is not a ‘get-away’ ticket or a ‘quick fix’. It is an education and a way of life.

Buddhism: Neither a Philosophy nor a Doctrine

Dighanakha asked the Buddha, "Gautama, what is your teaching? What are your doctrines? For my part, I dislike all doctrines and theories. I don't subscribe to any at all."

The Buddha smiled and asked, "Do you subscribe to your doctrine of not following any doctrines? Do you believe in your doctrine of not-believing?"

Somewhat taken aback, Dighanakha replied, "Gautama whether I believe or don't believe is no importance."

The Buddha spoke gently, "Once a person is caught by belief in a doctrine, he loses all his freedom. When one becomes dogmatic, he believes his doctrine is the only truth and that all other doctrines are heresy. Disputes and conflicts all arise from narrow views. They can extend endlessly, wasting precious time and sometimes even leading to war. Attachment to views is the greatest impediment to the spiritual path. Bound to narrow views, one becomes so entangled that it is no longer possible to let the door of truth open."

Dighanakha asked, "But what of your own teaching? If someone follows your teaching will he become caught in narrow views?"

"My teaching is not a doctrine nor a philosophy. It is not the result of discursive thought or mental conjecture like various philosophies which contend that the fundamental essence of the universe is fire, water, earth, wind, or spirit, or that the universe is either finite or infinite, temporal, or eternal. Mental conjecture and discursive thought about truth are like ants crawling around the rim of the bowl -- they never get anywhere. The things I say come from my own experience. You can confirm them all by your own experience.

My goal is not to explain the universe, but to help guide others to have a direct experience of reality. Words cannot describe reality. No-Show Tuesday

No-show Tuesday would have been an absolute no-show if not for my last student who saved my day! Woohoo! Gah but I did miss out on some precious sleep hours :( Right, so now I'm going to relate the whole story to you, because I have nothing better to do. Okay now read plz ^^

10:00 am - Biology Class with D.
I once slept through her 10:00 am doorbell, assuming she wasn't coming to class that day. That was a Tuesday as well. So this Tuesday I was especially careful that I didn't sleep through the doorbell... even if that meant forcing my eyes open with sticky tape after just four hours of sleep and eight hours on the computer (I would have tried using toothpicks to keep my eyes open, like Mr. Bean, but figured it was just a little too risky. I'm bound to go blind in a couple of years anyway, with the way my eyesight's going, so I'm not exactly looking for any catalyst activity right now...).

Anyhoo, I was painfully trying to stay vertical until 10:30, but still didn't hear any door bell. That's when I figured she must have showed up before 10:00, which would mean I was asleep and had repeated myself this uesday as well.

Oh em gee right? So I just went back to bed, too afraid to call and ask if she rang my bell at all. Mom wasn't at home either, so I had no way of finding out. The next thing I know I woke up at 1:30 pm.

1:00 pm - Driving lessons
Yeah, it was 1:30 and I was supposed to have been out driving half an hour ago. I checked my phone. I was expecting a message and a dozen miss-calls. But yeah, none. Zip. Nada.

So I waited till 4:00 pm just in case my instructor sent me a message telling me to get ready for a later time. He finishes his day at 5:00, so I knew there was no way he'd text me after 4:00 (each class is one hour long). All I did was wait.


5:00 pm - Chemistry class with M. and brothers
Okay, so my brothers had an English class that fateful Tuesday (thanks to the Sri Lankan School's new extra class + extra pay policy). Naturally their friend - who also happens to be my student - was with htem at the class. I watched the clock pass 6:00 until my brothers showed up. Apparently, their English class was over at 5:00, but they decided to stay and play until 5:45 dammit!


7:00 pm - Literature class with R.
Right, so after a wonderfully exciting day, I was hoping against hope that my last student would show up. Not that I'm usually very enthusiastic about sacrificing my sleep and Naruto time for classes, but actually sacrificing that sleep and Naruto time for nothing totally pisses me off!

It wasn't long before all the clocks in the house showed 7:30 on their dials... which is quite surprising because none of our clocks show the same time at any given moment. It's part of my dad's tactic. He makes sure that every clock is five minutes faster than the one before it. So on weekdays when people in the house are getting ready for work or school, we're psychologically bonked into thinking we're late... which results in everybody hurrying the heck up - for nothing.

Okay, getting back to topic. So it was 8:00 already and my last student wasn't exactly showing up. It really sucked because I had done some research on a paper and found this totally cool bit of info that I really wanted my student to have. Plus, it was all in American English. Which is always cool. Don't ask me why.

And so... just when I had totally given up hope, there was the long awaited door bell! Woohoo!

Of Racists, Hypocrites, Idiots, and Selective Amnesia

We had KFC delivered to our place for dinner today. Parents were out; the three of us had to finish binding a few reams of handouts for Wednesday’s exhibition. I had turned up the volume on CNN to listen to the reports on Sri Lanka when suddenly everything was interrupted by Mr. Peres’ speech at the Holocaust Remembrance Day. Of course the speech was a direct attack at Mr. Ahmadinejad’s one given at the International Conference on Racism.

While I am in complete disagreement with the Iranian president’s speech (which was rife with racist hatred instead of promoting racial tolerance), I am also in disagreement with Israel’s recent attack on Palestine.

While Mr. Peres pointed out that the continuing dream of Israelis was to promote peace, goodwill, and tolerance – human attributes that their ancestors were denied during the Holocaust – Israel’s drastic ‘terrorist sweep’ actions a few months ago questions the validity of this statement and wavers too close towards hypocrisy. If it was peace they were after, why did they wall up the Palestinians and shell the entire area with all unarmed civilians trapped inside? And if I were a Palestinian I’d be pissed too (no, not pissed, livid may be) if my country was shelled and destroyed by foreigners all for the heck of ridding a bunch of terrorists. Well perhaps the Israelis were provoked, but that doesn’t mean exercising their totally superior military power over a comparatively helpless nation. I can’t see peace, tolerance, or justice in that. That is not to say I condone the terrorist acts against Israel either. But the attack on Palestine left more civilians, and not terrorists, dead – and ultimately failed to achieve anything other than fuel more hatred.

Mr. Ahmadinejad, on the other hand, points out that the Holocaust never really happened. Here’s another strangely amusing character with selective amnesia who fills in the gaps with other events that never actually happened. If it were any other human race or religious group other than the Jews that were targeted during the Holocaust, would he have rephrased his words? If the Holocaust was genocide of the Muslims by the Nazi government, would he still have stated that it never took place? That is something he’d just have to tap in to his own heart and find out. Denying the Holocaust is like claiming there is genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka. Personally, I think the Iranian president’s denial of the Holocaust is just another excuse to find a reason to hate without using the word ‘racist’.

The Israel-Palestine conflict is perhaps more of a religious conflict today than one of land. Where once the Palestinians were fighting for what was their land – which is now occupied by Israel after the Second World War – it has now escalated into that dangerous type of war: a religious war, where land is no longer the primary concern.

Religion controls, dictates, and becomes such an inseparable part of our lives that it sometimes leaves us with a diminished and distorted will of our own. People cease to think or feel. They cease to reason beyond the limits of their ‘religion’. Eventually, it comes to a certain point where one is left feeling as if there is no part of one’s life or mind to call one’s own. This is where whatever is human ceases to exist, and the institution of religion and politics pulls the strings in the puppet show.

In my opinion, one is not born a Jew, a Muslim, or Christian. Neither is one born a Hindu, Taoist, Buddhist, Paganist, Satanist, or Wiccan. Religion is taught. Religion is nurtured. Religion is cultured.

Likewise hatred is not inherent but taught and fueled.

From what then does hatred spring? It springs from fear.

What does fear spring from? From ignorance.

In our ignorance we forget that first and foremost, we are human.

We were human before we were Muslim, or Christian, or Jewish, or Hindu, or Buddhist.

We were human before we were enemies or friends.

We were human before we studied our history.

We were human before we drew lines that divided the land masses.

We were human before we were man or woman.

We were human before we were black, white, yellow, red, or brown.

We were human before we were different.

And we will always be human, whether we like it or not. And so will the other person be human, as much we are.

Yet we choose to clump everybody else as the inevitable collective ‘them’. Not ‘us’. THEM.

Let us first remember who we are, before we judge another.

This is when I remember a famous quote from the Buddha:

“All beings tremble before violence.
All fear death, all love life.
So see yourself in others.
Then whom can you hurt?
What harm can you do?”

Perhaps if we could all see ourselves in others, we could probably save ourselves from annihilating our own species…
